Egypt’s mufti issues fatwa on sharing Wi-Fi passwords with neighbors

Egypt’s Grand Mufti has ruled that sharing a home internet connection with neighbors for a monthly fee is religiously prohibited.

• The Fatwa Committee of Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta stated that sharing the Wi-Fi password with neighbors is not permissible under Islamic law.
• Grand Mufti Nazir Muhammad Ayyad said the practice constitutes fraud and deception, and violates the financial rights of telecom companies.
• Ayyad explained that subscription contracts explicitly state the service is personal to the customer and cannot be transferred or resold without the company’s written approval.
• The fatwa noted that extracting benefit from the service in a manner not agreed upon in the contract breaches the principle of good faith in contract execution.
