The Vera Rubin Observatory begins 10-year sky survey

The Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile has started a 10-year survey of the southern sky, capturing images every 40 seconds.

• The observatory began its official science survey on June 30, 2026, running continuously for 10 years.
• The telescope uses a 3200-megapixel digital camera and an 8.4-meter mirror to image the entire southern sky every few nights.
• Project lead Željko Ivezić stated the survey could determine within 5 to 7 years whether dark energy exists or if gravity laws need revision.
• Scientists expect the survey to discover millions of new asteroids, including objects that may approach Earth.
