Lyhanna murder case leads to protests and review of 88,000 child abuse complaints

The rape and murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna has prompted protests and a government-ordered review of over 88,000 open child abuse complaints.

• Lyhanna went missing on May 29 after getting into a car with Jerome Barella, who has been charged with abduction and unlawful confinement and denies the charges; her body was found six days later in a grain silo.
• An official inquiry found that a prior complaint against Barella was not treated as a priority and the investigation was inadequately supervised.
• Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said the findings showed the "protection chain" for children had broken down.
• Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin ordered prosecutors to review every open child abuse complaint by July 14, a caseload that has grown to over 88,000.
