US Navy Funds Development of Unmanned Mine-Laying Robot for Submarine Launch

The US Navy has awarded a $14 million contract modification to develop a torpedo-sized uncrewed underwater vehicle for covert mine laying missions.

• The Naval Systems Command (NAVSEA) issued a $13.97 million contract modification to General Dynamics Mission Systems for additional prototypes, software, ground support equipment and engineering services for the "Medusa" project.
• Medusa is a consumable, single-use uncrewed vehicle launched from a submarine's torpedo tube that can travel autonomously to plant mines without risking the host submarine or its crew.
• General Dynamics initially won the Medusa development contract in September 2024 with a base value of $15.9 million, with optional clauses that could bring the total to $58.1 million through 2032.
• The company also develops the "Hammerhead" smart mine that sits on the seabed and launches a torpedo when sensors detect an enemy target.
