The World Health Organization has announced eight laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV infections in Saudi Arabia, including one death, recorded between January 1 and October 5, 2026.
- The cases were detected across six Saudi regions: Al-Jouf, Arar, Hafr Al-Batin, Riyadh, Tabuk, and Taif.
- WHO found no epidemiological links among the patients, indicating sporadic infections rather than a single outbreak.
- WHO assessed the infections as separate animal-to-human transmission events, with two patients reporting direct camel contact.
- WHO said seven of the eight patients had underlying conditions known as risk factors for severe MERS.
