The UN World Food Programme has warned that continued fighting in Yemen threatens total collapse of the country's food security, as hunger reaches record levels.
- WFP program operations chief Matthew Hollingworth said approximately 74 percent of households in accessible government-held areas cannot meet basic food needs, a record this year.
- Hollingworth said the agency was denied access to about 350,000 people it had been assisting.
- The WFP said it needs $109 million for emergency food aid for 1.5 million people affected by the recent escalation.
- Renewed fighting has displaced more than 149,000 people, and some 18.3 million now face acute food insecurity.
- The crisis is spilling into Djibouti, with thousands of refugees crossing the Bab el-Mandeb strait.
