Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined Google €403m for unlawfully processing users' location data between 2018 and 2020.
- The DPC ordered Google to bring its data processing into compliance with GDPR within six months.
- The inquiry, launched six years ago after complaints from European consumer organisations, examined three location-data features in effect from May 2018 to February 2020.
- Deputy commissioner Graham Doyle said individuals could have been unaware their location was being used to influence them with ads.
- Google said the case concerns historical policies that have since been updated, launching data-management tools from 2019 onwards.
