A European Cockpit Association survey of nearly 7,200 captains and first officers has found high levels of fatigue-related behaviour among European airline pilots.
- In the August survey, three-quarters of pilots reported at least one microsleep while operating an aircraft in the previous four weeks.
- 24% said they usually continue flying despite being too fatigued to work, while 16.8% said they instead report sick.
- Half of pilots said they operated a flight in the prior three months when they believed they should have declared themselves unfit.
- ECA president Tanja Harter urged the EU Aviation Safety Agency and airlines to take responsibility for fatigue risks, saying further inaction is "not an option."
