Thieves broke into the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, taking four works but abandoning two; the two missing are valued at €9m each.
- Two thieves cut through the museum's garden fence early on Tuesday, triggering an alarm at 05:48 local time; police arrived within five minutes.
- The pair fled with four paintings but dropped two in the grounds — Portrait of Madame Pichon and Coco Reading were recovered, while Young Woman at the Well and Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano remain missing.
- Mayor Bryan Masson said the thieves were "well equipped and well informed" and described the incident as "a warning about the protection of our museums" facing a new form of organised crime.
- The incident follows last October's Louvre crown-jewellery theft and last month's theft of Renaissance paintings from a museum in Sicily.
