Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh has issued a clarification saying she backs the government's migration reforms, after joking she could not "lie" about supporting the plans.
- Fahnbulleh told reporters she had made three promises entering politics, the first being to "never lie," after declining to endorse the reforms in a Sky News interview.
- She later said the remark was meant as "light-hearted, self-deprecating" and that she "fully support[s] our home secretary and the government's position on migration reform."
- The home secretary is consulting on plans to extend the residency period foreign workers must complete before qualifying for permanent residence.
- Cabinet minister Angela Rayner has criticised the proposed changes, and former immigration minister Mike Tapp urged Mahmood to "read the room."
