The United States has approved visas for an Iranian delegation led by President Masoud Pezeshkian to attend the UN General Assembly in New York despite the ongoing war.
- The US State Department confirmed Thursday it would issue visas to the delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
- A State Department spokesman said the delegation will face strict movement restrictions, a ban on buying luxury goods, and will be smaller than last year's.
- The US and Israel launched a war on Iran on February 28, which Tehran says has killed more than 3,000 people.
- The restrictions echo last year's measures barring Iranian officials from New York retailers such as Costco and Sam's Club.
- The US framed the approval as a legal obligation under the 1947 UN headquarters agreement, which requires issuing visas promptly and without fee.
- State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said on X that the Iranian regime's elite will not be allowed to use the UN General Assembly for a luxury shopping spree.
