Oxford United has abandoned a new sportswear collection after shirts bearing 'United 93' inadvertently referenced the September 11 attacks.
- Oxford United launched the "Campus Collection" on Friday and removed it from sale within roughly two hours after the club realised the meaning of the phrase.
- The club said the range "was released without understanding of the historical context and associations" and apologised, taking "full responsibility for not undertaking proper due diligence."
- Oxford United said it has removed the collection with immediate effect and is reviewing its approval processes to prevent a repeat.
- 'United 93' referenced the club's 1893 founding year and the call sign of the United Airlines flight that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, killing 44 people.
