Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has filed an application with the EU intellectual property office to register her voice as a trademark against unauthorized AI cloning.
- The application, dated October 5 and confirmed by her office, includes a four-second recording of Meloni saying "I am Giorgia Meloni" twice in Italian.
- The request remains under review at EUIPO, handled by Italian law firm MBM Legal through lawyer Marco Mastracci.
- In 2024, Meloni filed a civil lawsuit against a Sardinian man accused of creating deepfake pornographic images of her face; the case remains pending.
- Meloni said many people lack her means to defend against such violations and urged internet users to verify content before sharing.
- The application comes ahead of Italy's general elections, alongside similar AI-voice trademark filings by celebrities including Matthew McConaughey and Taylor Swift.
