Spain's coalition government has approved housing measures including an eviction ban for vulnerable tenants through 2030, following protests sparked by an elderly woman's eviction.
- Cabinet approved two decrees extending eviction restrictions for vulnerable tenants to 2030, banning vulture funds from buying property until 2028, and extending rental contracts to 2028.
- Maricarmen Abascal, evicted from her Madrid apartment last week, has accepted an offer to return at €533 a month, under 30 percent of her income.
- Health Minister Mónica García said the measures would bring relief to more than five million people.
- Junts spokesperson Míriam Nogueras said the party remains far from backing the decrees, demanding protection for small landlords.
- The property firm agreed to cap Abascal's rent at her previous rate for eight years.
- Madrid's tenants' union welcomed the agreement with the property firm, calling it a 'historic win'.
