Iran exploited mobile network vulnerabilities to locate U.S. military in Middle East, report says

A Financial Times report has detailed how Iran used SS7 and ad‑tech vulnerabilities to pinpoint U.S. forces ahead of and during the Iran War.

• The Iranian government exploited well‑known SS7 protocol vulnerabilities to locate U.S. military personnel in Iraq, Bahrain and other Middle Eastern countries, according to the Financial Times.
• The report, citing research by the Mobile Surveillance Monitor and anonymous officials, said the surveillance occurred in the build‑up to the Iran War and its early days.
• Iran also abused advertising technology to track cellphone users, another commonly used surveillance technique, the report stated.
• The attacks enabled by this surveillance resulted in several injuries to U.S. forces, the report said.
