US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Western civilization faces an "inflection point" and urged Europe, before the Acropolis in Athens, to reclaim classical values.
- Rubio delivered the speech Wednesday during a three-country tour of NATO allies that also includes Iceland and Portugal.
- Rubio called on Europe to "rebuild our institutions and our alliances to face these threats together," adding that nations need not abandon their identities to recognize common interests.
- Rubio said the West "opened our borders and outsourced our industry and allowed our militaries to wither," describing nationalism as a "dirty word."
- Greek police said more than 2,000 protesters gathered in central Athens on Tuesday against the visit, as Syntagma Square was closed to traffic.
- Rubio urged Europe to “awaken from its long slumber” and called for a rejection of “globalist” politics in Athens.
