Netflix has released "The New Stanford Prison Experiment," a six-episode reality series revisiting the controversial 1971 study of authority and obedience.
- Netflix's series, filmed inside a Georgia county jail, divides 30 participants into eight guards and 22 prisoners who swap roles midway through the show.
- Executive producer Jane Lipsitz said a straight recreation of the original experiment "would be unconscionable," with safeguards including psychological screenings and a safe word that lets participants leave.
- The 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, led by psychologist Philip Zimbardo, ended after six days and its methods and conclusions have since been widely criticized.
