Family of Mississippi teen Nolan Wells demands answers and orders independent autopsy after death following boating trip

The family of an 18-year-old Black teenager found dead after a July 4 boating trip has questioned law enforcement’s investigation and commissioned an independent autopsy.

• The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said no foul play was suspected and asked the public for any information, photos or video of alleged altercations on Horn Island.
• Attorney Ben Crump said the family distrusted Mississippi law enforcement because their Black son died after going out with three white men, and announced he had ordered an independent autopsy.
• The family cited conflicting witness statements about whether Wells planned to stay on the island or leave with friends, and noted his cellphone and car keys were returned by the friends without him.
• Christine Wonsley, Wells’ mother, said police initially suggested accidental drowning but that she was uncomfortable because her son knew how to swim.
