Libya's House of Representatives has elected Al-Salihin Abdul Nabi as speaker, replacing Aqila Saleh, amid a dispute over the legality of the vote.
- Spokesman Abdullah Bliheg announced the election during a Tuesday session in Benghazi chaired by second deputy Misbah Douma.
- The session proceeded to elect the first deputy, with Tariq al-Ashtar and Seddik Hammouda advancing to a runoff.
- On Monday, 98 deputies voted to adopt a parliamentary term for the presidency office, with 102 deputies present.
- Saleh called Monday's session "unofficial" with no legal effect and postponed the session he had convened for Tuesday.
- The vote ended Saleh's 12-year tenure as speaker of the eastern-based House of Representatives.
- The change followed a newly adopted rule limiting the speaker to a single 12-month term.
