Venezuela has released dozens of political prisoners after a second round of Washington-backed talks between the interim government and the opposition.
- Human rights group Justicia, Encuentro y Perdon (JEP) said 39 political dissidents were freed Friday and Saturday following the second round of negotiations in Caracas.
- Those released included eight women accused of narco-terrorism in 2021 and six people charged in a 2020 failed attempt to overthrow former President Nicolas Maduro.
- JEP said it directly verified the release of 29 people and announced it would continue to demand freedom for all those still awaiting release.
- Foro Penal said 344 people remained classified as political prisoners as of September 18, down from 391 on August 10.
- Wilder Vasquez was among those released, days after interim President Delcy Rodriguez met with US President Donald Trump in New York.
- Rodriguez reiterated in her UN speech that 'there will be elections in Venezuela' without specifying when.
- Some opposition voices criticized the Rodriguez-Trump meeting as failing to advance their calls for swift elections.
