Israel's dispute over conscripting ultra-Orthodox Jews has deepened a social divide, pressured Netanyahu's coalition and moved to the center of the upcoming elections.
- Netanyahu said his conscription law was "the beginning of a historic path" toward integrating Haredim into army and security service.
- Rabbi Dov Landau said Torah students should not serve and should refrain from visiting the wounded or attending soldiers' funerals.
- Lead rival Gadi Eisenkot said a country that sends its best to fight cannot accept a "state within a state" among Haredim.
- The Supreme Court voided the conscription exemption two years ago, prompting mass protests, while United Torah Judaism quit the coalition and Shas remained inside.
