London has pedestrianised a roughly one-kilometre stretch of Oxford Street, banning cars, buses, taxis and bicycles from the shopping artery.
- The closure took effect on 26 October, covering about half the street from Oxford Circus towards Marble Arch.
- The change is the first phase of a regeneration including two new public squares, 50 trees and hundreds of seats.
- Mayor Sadiq Khan said London would monitor the changes and pledged the project as a 'proof of concept' that pedestrianisation raises footfall.
- Councillor Tim Barnes said residents "haven't really been listened to," with the consultation process largely one-way.
