The World Health Organization says it lacks the full picture on the suspected plague death of a laboratory worker in Siberia.
- Darya Shipilova, 28, died two days after falling ill with cold-like symptoms while working at the anti-plague institute in Irkutsk.
- Russian authorities deny any connection with the institute, attributing her death to pneumonia of an unknown aetiology and imposing quarantine at the lab and nearby hospitals.
- WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency cannot conduct a full risk assessment and is awaiting Russia's response on reports of a second employee with pneumonia.
- Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din, Egypt's presidential health adviser, said no official scientific confirmation exists that the researcher died from plague bacteria.
- Russia dismissed media reports of a second suspected pneumonic plague case as false information, urging reliance on Rospotrebnadzor's official statements.
- The US Centers for Disease Control described the risk to Americans as extremely low and is monitoring travellers from the region.
- The WHO said Russia has not fully complied with its international reporting obligations over the suspected plague death.
- Local media reported Shipilova may have died after a lab accident involving a broken test tube at the institute.
- About 200 contacts have been placed in quarantine, with the WHO assessing the public risk as low.
