The Liver Doc: India's polarising hepatologist

Dr Cyriac Abby Philips has built a reputation as a combative critic of alternative medicine while treating advanced liver disease in Kerala.

• Philips, known online as the "Liver Doc", has faced 16 legal cases in six years after publicly challenging traditional medicine practices.
• India's Ayush Ministry held two committee meetings to discuss Philips, and a police inspector travelled two days to question him over a social media post.
• Philips has published peer-reviewed studies on liver injury linked to traditional Indian medicines and led crowdfunded investigations into protein powders and generic drugs.
• Philips said he adopted an aggressive online persona to ensure his message was heard and that he gave up alcohol four years ago because he could not ask patients to stop drinking while he drank.
