US Accuses Sudanese Army of Using Chemical Weapons, Demands International Inspection

The United States has formally accused the Sudanese army of using chlorine as a chemical weapon and demanded that Port Sudan authorities submit to international verification by the OPCW.

• The United States told the OPCW Executive Council that its independent technical assessments concluded the Sudanese army used chemical weapons in 2024 and remained non-compliant in 2025.
• US Ambassador Nicole Shampaine specified that the army used chlorine as a chemical weapon, the first time Washington has publicly identified the agent used.
• Washington demanded that the Port Sudan authorities provide a full declaration of Sudan’s chemical program and allow immediate, unfettered access for OPCW verification teams.
• The US stated that a state which has used chemical weapons and failed to return to compliance should not continue serving on the OPCW Executive Council, implicitly questioning Sudan’s membership.
