A Norwegian government-appointed committee has proposed allowing the world's largest sovereign wealth fund to invest in nuclear weapons manufacturers, ending a longstanding ethical ban.
- The committee proposed allowing investments in nuclear weapons firms based in states recognized under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and allied with Norway.
- The fund currently excludes 14 companies, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Safran, for producing nuclear weapons.
- Committee chair Sven Gjedrem said the change would re-admit several British, French, and American defense firms to the fund's allowed investments.
- Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg said the ban is paradoxical since some firms may be vital to Norway's security amid Russian nuclear threats.
