The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen for the IceCube observatory and discoveries of astrophysical neutrinos.
- Halzen, a Belgian particle physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, receives the 12 million Swedish kronor prize.
- The committee cited his "decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin."
- Nobel Committee Chair Mark Pearce said Halzen led an international team of researchers and engineers who built the instrument.
- Halzen first proposed using Antarctic ice to detect neutrinos in 1988.
