The four-lane crossing links the Chinese border city of Dandong with North Korea's Sinuiju, after sitting unused since its 2014 completion.
- The bridge opened Thursday after remaining unused since construction finished in 2014 because connecting roads and customs facilities in North Korea were unfinished.
- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the bridge is "an important facility for connectivity" that will "further facilitate trade and people-to-people exchanges."
- Trucks decorated with national flags crossed the river during Thursday's opening ceremony.
- Last month North Korea and Russia inaugurated their first road bridge.
- The new crossing is expected to ease pressure on the aging Dandong-Sinuiju road bridge, which handles over 70% of official bilateral trade.
- The new 3 km bridge opened alongside an adjacent 1.3 km customs facility that had also sat unfinished.
