Study suggests new gravitational wave type may reveal black hole event horizon behavior

A study published in Nature has analyzed the strongest gravitational wave signal ever recorded, indicating possible detection of direct waves from near the event horizon.

• The study analyzed the signal GW250114 from the merger of two black holes, suggesting a new type of gravitational wave called direct waves.
• Physicist Cezheng Ma said the signal's strength allowed immediate testing of predictions about waves originating near the event horizon.
• Katerina Chatziioannou of Caltech said detector improvements have reduced noise, making it easier to distinguish these signals.
• Emanuele Berti of Johns Hopkins University cautioned that it remains uncertain whether direct waves can be reliably detected.
