Indian Authorities Launch Operation to Recover "Green Boots" Body from Mount Everest

Indian authorities have launched an operation to recover the body of a climber known as "Green Boots" from Mount Everest nearly three decades after his death.

• India's Indo-Tibetan Border Police have begun a recovery operation with high-altitude specialists on the Tibetan side of Everest.
• The body is believed to be that of Dorjee Morup, who died in a May 1996 storm that killed eight climbers across several expeditions.
• Morup's remains, identifiable by bright green boots, have lain in Everest's "death zone" above 8,000 meters since his death.
• China closed Everest to foreign climbers during the spring 2026 season without publicly explaining the reason.
