Andy Burnham has announced a private parking code giving drivers longer grace periods after private firms issued a record 16.9 million tickets in a year.
- Drivers get a guaranteed five minutes to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a session ends before facing a fine.
- Charges will be scrapped on appeal for honest mistakes such as medical emergencies or breakdowns, with a maximum £20 charge for smaller slip-ups.
- Burnham said the charges leave people "ripped off and out of pocket," announcing he is "putting a stop to them."
- Which? said the rules fall short after the £100 maximum charge was retained despite calls to halve it to £50.
