The administration has barred Microsoft and seven other tech companies from the PERM program employers use to sponsor foreign workers for permanent US residency.
- Vice President JD Vance announced the suspension, accusing companies of fraudulently using visas to displace American workers.
- Affected companies include Microsoft, Adobe, Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Capgemini.
- Vance said Microsoft laid off 6,000 US workers last year while securing 6,300 H-1B visas and nearly 3,000 green cards.
- Microsoft said 80 percent of its recent H-1B visa applications were to extend or change the status of existing employees.
