Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will convene an emergency security meeting Monday after weekend cost-of-living protests in Milan escalated into violent clashes.
- Police in Milan deployed tear gas and water cannons after masked protesters threw paving stones and objects at officers, with disorder spreading to Turin and Bologna.
- More than 200 people were detained across Saturday and Sunday, 80 percent of them minors, and prosecutors requested prison sentences for five adults arrested for looting.
- Meloni said "to demonstrate is a right. To lay our cities to waste is not," and called on political opponents to condemn the rioting "unanimously."
- Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said the violence was a "new phenomenon" that "originates from an international scenario and therefore feeds itself."
