A Florida police officer who found Dennis West dead during a welfare check has been arrested for allegedly taking over his identity and living in his renovated home for years.
- Brian Louis Sguros, 35, of the Lauderhill Police Department, was arrested this week on charges including official misconduct and criminal use of a deceased person's identification.
- After finding West dead of natural causes in July 2022, Sguros allegedly told the medical examiner he was West's friend and that West had no living family.
- The Broward County Sheriff's Office said Sguros created "a complex scheme to take control of the individual's home," moving in that August and renovating the two-story property.
- Sguros said he took possession because the home was hazardous and to prevent squatting, and he demanded reimbursement after surrendering the keys.
