- Gov. Kathy Hochul signed an executive order temporarily barring the state from approving new permits for data centers of 50 megawatts or larger.
- The order applies to permits not yet completed and will remain until the state finalizes an environmental review process expected to take about a year.
- Hochul said data centers "should only be built in places that want them" and will never be exempt from local zoning and approvals.
- Hochul’s office is also considering requiring data centers to pay into a fund supporting the electrical grid and preventing hyperscale centers from receiving tax benefits.
