AI-Driven Data Centers Pose Environmental Challenge, Study Finds

A Lancaster University study has revealed that data centers now consume 3% of global energy, prompting calls for a mandatory green computing framework.

• A study published by Lancaster University titled "Natural Environmental Data Science and Green Computing Initiatives" examined the energy impact of AI infrastructure.
• The study found that data centers currently account for approximately 3% of total global energy production, with consumption growing rapidly.
• The analysis estimated that 85% of energy used by servers is wasted during idle states, representing significant resource drain.
• The study proposed a mandatory framework to improve technology sustainability, including circular economy principles and advanced cooling techniques.
