US President Donald Trump said Tuesday a sanctions bill targeting Russia may be expanded to also cover Iran and Hezbollah, and defended his temporary easing of Iranian oil sanctions.
- Trump stated the legislation, currently targeting Russia, could include Iran and may include Hezbollah.
- Trump said the bill has a "good chance" of passage and is a tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
- Trump said he does not regret temporarily easing oil sanctions on Iran, explaining he gave them a chance to make a deal.
- The administration reimposed all oil sanctions and reinstated a full naval blockade last week after Iranian attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.
Latest developments
- The updated sanctions bill reduces the maximum tariff rate on the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas from 500% to 100%.
- It exempts a country's Russian gas purchases if its import share is below 15% of total annual exports and it takes steps to reduce imports.
