Cilia Flores, wife of ousted Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, returned to a New York court Thursday to seek house arrest on medical grounds.
- Flores, 69, appeared before federal judge Alvin Hellerstein on Thursday to request release from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and transfer to house arrest.
- Her lawyers said doctors recommended cardiac catheterization and that she lost 25 pounds in custody and may require heart surgery.
- Prosecutors opposed the request, saying Flores poses an "extreme risk of flight and danger to the public" if released.
- US prosecutors are weighing possible new charges against Maduro and Flores over the torture of Americans detained in Venezuela, CNN reported Wednesday.
