- Messi announced his international retirement in August after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final.
- Coach Lionel Scaloni said he pushed to hold the farewell immediately after that announcement, uncertain he would remain in his post.
- Adidas launched a special Argentina jersey for the occasion, with Messi's name and number 10 in gold.
- Scaloni, whose contract ends in December, said he will meet AFA president Claudio Tapia in the coming days to discuss his future.
- All 80,000 tickets for the farewell match sold out in under two hours amid massive demand.
- AFA president Claudio Tapia said Messi accepted the invitation, calling the night 'the last dance for the best player in the world.'
