The UK government has approved production at the Jackdaw gasfield, 150 miles east of Aberdeen, owned by Shell and Equinor.
- Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh and chancellor John Healey made the announcement from Aberdeen on Wednesday.
- The approval follows a Court of Session ruling last year that quashed the original consent over unassessed emissions from burning the gas.
- Fahnbulleh said the consent does not violate Labour's manifesto pledge against new licences because Jackdaw was licensed in 2022.
- Uplift's Tessa Khan said the field would supply about 2 percent of gas demand and urged Burnham to reject the Rosebank field.
- The government also delayed a decision on the neighbouring Rosebank field while approving Jackdaw.
- Prime Minister Andy Burnham framed the approval as pragmatic, citing cost-of-living pressures.
- Jackdaw is expected to start supplying gas within a month and boost domestic production by about six percent at peak.
