Egypt's National Council for Childhood and Motherhood said it stopped the planned marriage of a 17-year-old girl in Cairo's Nasr City district on her wedding night.
- The council received a report via child helpline 16000 that the girl's parents intended to complete her marriage.
- Coordinating with the Public Prosecution, authorities detained those involved inside the wedding hall before the marriage was completed.
- The girl's parents pledged not to complete the marriage until she reaches the legal age of 18.
- Sabry Othman said the marriage would violate constitutional and civil status provisions banning marriage contracts under 18.
