OpenAI has added alignment researcher Paul Christiano to its board as researchers escalate warnings that AI could soon slip beyond human control.
- Christiano, a former OpenAI researcher, said he sees a meaningful risk of catastrophic, irreversible loss of control in the near term and that the industry is not on track to reduce it.
- He joins the board's Safety and Security Committee, led by Carnegie Mellon's Zico Kolter, which holds final say on releasing new models.
- Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger warned there is a greater than 10% probability AI leads to human extinction within the next decade.
- Jacob Coxon, who resigned from Anthropic on Tuesday, said neither Anthropic nor OpenAI is acting responsibly.
